Can You Weld Cast Iron?

Yes, but it's one of the trickiest repairs in the trade, and most people get it wrong.
4 min read

People ask this all the time, usually standing over a cracked engine block, a busted old bench vise, a wood stove, or a piece of antique machinery. The honest answer is: yes, cast iron can be welded, but it is one of the fussiest jobs in the whole trade, and it is where a lot of cheaper repairs fall apart.

Why cast iron fights you

Cast iron is loaded with carbon, way more than regular steel. That is what makes it great at what it does and terrible to weld. All that carbon makes it hard and brittle, and it absolutely hates sudden changes in temperature. Heat one spot up fast and cool it fast, which is exactly what welding does, and the area right next to your weld can crack even if the weld itself is perfect.

How it's done right

Doing cast iron correctly is mostly about patience and temperature, not speed:

Repair or replace?

Sometimes a good cast iron repair saves a part that is irreplaceable or expensive to swap. Other times, honestly, you are better off replacing it, and we will tell you that straight rather than take your money on a fix that won't last. Cast iron is also a prime example of why welds crack when the heat is handled wrong.
